Shortly after this morning's tragic shooting in an Aurora, CO movie theater, federal law enforcement officials reported that the suspect was in custody. James Holmes, a 24-year-old white male, is the masked gunman responsible for taking the lives of 12 people early Friday morning. The FBI is currently reporting that Holmes acted alone, has no significant criminal history, and they do not believe he is associated with any known terrorist organizations. The motive of the shooter is currently unknown.
Despite the information provided by officials in Colorado, it didn’t take long for the mainstream media to lose focus from the loss of human life and begin politicizing the tragic events.
“There are many reports now on who this shooter was because there seems to be quite a few James Holmes in the Aurora area. In fact, I believe there are 30 of them. But that hasn't stopped the media from saying, "Oh, it's this one. It's this one. It's this one. Look at this website." Some media outlets are just posting Facebook pages and they don't even know if they have the right guy,” Glenn told listeners this morning.
One of the 'James Holmes' who has been selected at random by the “journalists” in the mainstream media posted this on his Facebook page this morning:
“Dearest random Facebook people who keep confusing me for a mass murderer and yet still send me Facebook requests. I appreciate the fact that you're trying to become better informed about the occurrences last night in Aurora, but you have been somewhat misled in that I am not the man who did it. I am not 24 year old gun slinging killer from Aurora. I'm a 22 year old book slinging mass eater in Littleton, somewhat distinct I would assume. But I would appreciate it if you would read this particular post and not assume that it would be interesting to be friends with someone on Facebook who is very possibly going to be probably going to be in jail and not be able to confirm your friend request anyway. Or even be friends with his girlfriend. In the picture it's him and his girlfriend. Or even be friends with his girlfriend who had the rather interesting experience of having to tell someone she had a job interview with that she is not, in fact, dating a serial killer. James Holmes happens to be a pretty common name, surprisingly. So try not to jump the gun.”
After hearing this Pat pointed out that ABC News clearly didn’t take this advice.
Brian Ross, “Chief Investigative Correspondent” for ABC News, didn’t spend much time covering the victims of the theater shooting this during ABC’s live coverage (or from his personal Twitter account), instead he took an unverified “report” (otherwise known at ABC as a Google search) to try and connect James Holmes to the Colorado Tea Party.
Ross was 100% inaccurate in his statement, which has now been retracted, but that won’t stop the smear from continuing to spread.
Here is Brian Ross' statement this morning on ABC:
“There is a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado page on the Colorado Tea Party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes, but it is Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.”

One of the first things Glenn said this morning on his radio program was that someone would jump on this tragedy and use it for their own political narrative – ABC News was that outlet.
Stu described it as “some of the worst reporting I've ever seen in my entire life.”
“I have to tell you if I'm Jim Holmes and that is my Tea Party website, I as a Tea Party and I as Jim Holmes sue ABC News. I sue them,” Glenn said. “It's time to teach these people a lesson. Sue them. You smeared me nationally. You've smeared the Tea Party organization nationally. You have taken a crisis and made it into a political statement. You don't even know. And what good does that information do anyone? None. It does none.”
ABC News has retracted the comments and issued this apology:
“An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.”
Brian Ross isn’t the only public figure trying to turn this into a political event. Twitchy has statements from others pushing for gun control and pointing fingers in the wake of the massacre.
